Background of the Study

Waste management is an essential aspect of public health and environmental sustainability. In Nasarawa State, rapid urbanization and population growth have led to increased waste generation, which, when inadequately managed, contributes to various health hazards. Improper waste disposal, such as open dumping and inadequate recycling systems, poses significant risks, including the spread of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and malaria. Additionally, the accumulation of waste can lead to environmental degradation, including soil and water contamination. This study aims to assess the waste management practices in Nasarawa State and evaluate the resulting health risks associated with poor waste management.

Statement of the Problem

Waste management practices in Nasarawa State are not adequately addressing the growing volume of waste, resulting in the accumulation of refuse in public spaces and water sources. Poor waste disposal systems contribute to various health hazards, especially in urban areas. Despite the increasing awareness of the importance of proper waste management, there is limited research on its direct health impacts in Nasarawa State. This study will fill this gap by investigating the correlation between waste management practices and health outcomes in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the waste management practices in Nasarawa State.
  2. To identify the health hazards associated with improper waste management in the state.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing waste management systems in mitigating public health risks.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current waste management practices in Nasarawa State?
  2. What health hazards are associated with poor waste management in Nasarawa State?
  3. How effective are the current waste management systems in mitigating health risks in Nasarawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Improper waste management practices in Nasarawa State are significantly associated with an increase in vector-borne diseases like malaria and cholera.
  2. Poor waste disposal practices contribute to environmental pollution, leading to health risks such as waterborne diseases and respiratory issues.
  3. Improved waste management practices can significantly reduce the health hazards associated with waste in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the assessment of waste management practices and their direct effects on public health in Nasarawa State. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining real-time health data related to waste-related diseases and the challenge of evaluating the effectiveness of waste management strategies implemented in urban and rural areas.

Definitions of Terms

  • Waste Management: The process of collecting, transporting, processing, and disposing of waste materials in an environmentally safe and sustainable manner.
  • Health Hazards: Risks that have the potential to cause harm to human health, such as diseases transmitted through contaminated water or air.
  • Vector-Borne Diseases: Diseases transmitted by vectors such as mosquitoes, flies, and rodents, commonly associated with poor waste management.
